My dear Mumford,
Thanks for your note.
I am sorry to know that you are in hospital, but congratulate you on your courage in insisting upon an exploratory operation, and I hope that as you have been justified in that, so your hopes of better health in future will be abundantly fulfilled.
We also have been getting disquieting news of Cheal’s health. The Formosan Council applied to Amoy for the loan of Dansey Smith during July, to allow Cheal to get away for a holiday. We cabled to Amoy strongly backing that suggestion, but we have a cable in reply saying that the Amoy Council does not consider the suggestion feasible.
We are writing to Formosa urging that even at some risk, though it be a temporary closing of the hospital, Cheal should take a “let-up” rather than carry on till he breaks down. The only glimmer of hope of relied that we have, and it is somewhat distant, is that we may be able, through a special arrangement, to get Dr. Little’s services for five years, but not beginning till the Autumn of 1931. I wish we could have secured him for the Autumn of this year.
Perhaps when you are up in London to be examined you may find the time to call in here. If you give me notice, I will try to be on hand.

　感謝你的來信。
　很遺憾聽到你住院的消息，不過我也必須恭賀你，有這樣勇氣進行探索性手術，希望你這次正確判斷，能讓你爾後健康狀況更佳。
　我們也收到有關Cheal健康狀況的不樂觀消息，福爾摩沙理事會聯繫廈門理事會，希望他們能讓我們7月借用Dansey Smith，好讓Cheal可以好好休假休養身體。我們發電報給廈門理事會提出這樣建議，但他們不認為這樣作法可行。
　我們寫信給福爾摩沙理事會，告知他們應該冒著風險，先關閉醫院好讓Cheal休假，免得他工作到崩潰。我們現在唯一的一絲希望，即便很渺茫，就是希望可以安排Little醫生到我們這邊工作5年（但從1931年開始），真希望我們今年秋天就可以先聘用他。
　或許你去倫敦做身體檢查時，可以找機會來看看我們，如果你提前通知我，我會想辦法跟你碰面。
