Dear Sir,
I have been training under the auspices of the Edinburgh Medical Missionary Society since October 1919, in the hope that I may ultimately achieve, God willing, my ambition of becoming a Medical Missionary.
It has, all along, been my desire to serve in China, and as my own Church – British Province of the Moravian – has but limited openings for a doctor, none in China, I have and am still, unattached to any Society. I considered it advisable to be ‘free’ throughout the course, so that when the time came I might be able to offer where I knew there was an immediate need.
As I am now in my Final Year, and hope it may be possible to qualify for MB ChB this year, I consider the time has now come to get into connection with a Protestant Missionary Society.

　自1919年10月起，我一直在愛丁堡醫療宣教傳道會受訓，若上帝許可，期望能成功當上醫療宣教士。
　我始終期許自己能去中國服務，但因我自己教會 – 英國省摩拉維亞弟兄會醫生缺位有限，且沒有任何在中國的缺位，使我至今未依附於任何傳道會。我認為受訓期間保持「自由」一身會比較明智，因機會來臨時，我才能立即答應。
　這是我讀書最後一年，希望今年能成功通過內外全科醫學士考試，我認為現在是接觸新教傳道會的好時機了。
