Reverend Carstairs Douglas (1830-1877) was born in Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire, Scotland.
He arrived in Amoy, a mall island of Fukiang, China, in 1855, then he found Taiwan and Amoy had trades and many interactions frequently and living styles almost the same. So he had a vision to spread the Gospel to Taiwan.
He started to write reports back to the UK and recommended sending missionaries to Taiwan.
Editing and publishing an English-Chinese Dictionary was his fantastic service, the “Chinese–English Dictionary of the Vernacular or Spoken Language of Amoy” published in 1873.
