Gospel Pioneer to Chinese Society, Reverend Robert Morrison, 1807

Robert Morrison, FRS (1782 - 1834), was an Anglo-Scottish Protestant missionary appointed to Guangdong, Qing-Empire China by London Mission Society in 1807.

He was a pioneer who translated Scripture to Chinese Society in classic Chinese.

He worked for the East India Company as “The Office of Chinese Translator to the English Factory at Canton” in 1809 to support his mission and Scripture translation. He hired two Chinese secretly to help him translate and print the Chinese version of Scripture because at that time the Qing Government had forbidden any Chinese to teach foreigners to learn Chinese or would be punished by death.

He finished his 1st edition of the New Testament translation in 1813 and used traditional Chinese Wood-sculpture printing technology to print this first edition Chinese version New Testament in 1815.

The Wood-sculpture printing method in Chinese Culture has at least 1,600 years of history, printing workers sculpted all text and patterns on wood plates and then printed publication pages using those wood-sculpture plates and then bound all pages to finish a book.
